One of the interesting things about spending too much money is that people often will either not realize they are doing it, or try to attempt to rationalize their spending habits when overspending. We often will catch our overspending as soon as it causes a problem in our lives or forces us to live frugally to an excessive extent for a period of time. The best way to prevent this is to catch your overspending in the act, or at least have the mindset built to where you will not overspend in the first place.
Check Your Bank Accounts Daily
Some people have this feeling that they are entirely financially comfortable for a time, particularly after a paycheck comes in. This results in them spending amounts of money that may feel safe, but in reality, are doing damage to your bank account. A good way to combat this is to actively check the numbers lost and gained, as numbers are often lost to over spenders.
Use Cash
Using a designated amount of cash weekly or monthly will allow you to see the gravity that your purchases are having. By using cash, you also can create mini budgets for yourself by limiting your spending to whatever cash amount you deemed necessary. As are you beginning to notice, a common theme of overspending is simply not being physically aware of how much you are spending.
Use the “3-Day Rule” for online purchases
One of the biggest culprits that enforce overspending are sites like Amazon, where you can buy whatever you want whenever you want, and likely get it delivered within a day. This convenience also forces people to be vulnerable to impulse purchases, which is why it is a good idea to never buy anything non-essential online until you have thought about it for at least 3 days.
